Climate Bond Initiative Establishes Green AI Data Center Alliance

Green AI Data Center Alliance

The Climate Bond Initiative (CBI) establishes the Global Green AI Data Center Alliance with the aim of establishing clear and credible standards for sustainable data center development.

The Green AI Data Center Alliance was jointly established by the Climate Bond Initiative and multiple regional Green Building Committees, which possess expertise in building certification, performance benchmarking, green finance, and sustainability standards.

Background of Green AI Data Center Alliance

The rapid growth of AI data centers poses challenges to electricity, water resources, and utility costs. Currently, AI data centers consume approximately 1.5% to 2% of the world’s electricity, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that this demand will double by 2030. Goldman Sachs predicts that 60% of new data centers will rely on fossil fuels, resulting in a global increase of 220 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. 4% of electricity is consumed in data centers in the United States, and it is expected to increase to 8% by 2028. Some large generative AI models may consume 4600 times more energy in their working state than old models. The International Energy Agency expects that 20% of data center planning projects will face delay risks due to power grid restrictions.

The water consumption of data centers may exacerbate local water supply pressure, with an annual water consumption of approximately 66.2 billion liters in US data centers, which could triple by 2028. Some large data centers consume approximately 19 million liters of water per day, which is equivalent to the water demand of a small city. Due to the lack of mandatory water disclosure obligations in data centers, actual results may be higher than predicted. This may lead to an increase in resource costs for consumers in the area where the data center is located.

Introduction to Green AI Data Center Alliance

The Green AI Data Center Alliance aims to meet investors’ concerns about green data centers, establish transparent benchmarks to clearly define green data centers, help investors, operators, and regulatory agencies reduce carbon emissions, and protect water resources and energy systems. The initial work of the green AI data center will focus on two priorities:

  • Develop sustainable standards: Develop an environmental and social performance standard framework for global data centers, covering energy, carbon emissions, water resources, biodiversity, and community impact, among others.
  • Promote market empowerment: Support investments in green AI data centers that meet standards through credible green financial instruments such as green bonds and sustainable development loans.

The Green AI Data Center Alliance plans to launch a series of standard frameworks, benchmark tools, and financing guidelines to provide a roadmap for global data center green transformation and guide trillions of dollars in investment towards sustainable data center projects.
