2026 H1 Global Sustainable Bond Report

Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) releases 2026 H1 global sustainable bond report, aimed at summarizing the development of the global sustainable bond market.

As of June 2026, the total issuance of global sustainable bonds is about 7.3 trillion US dollars, of which about 530 billion US dollars was issued in 2026 H1, which is basically the same as the issuance of the same period last year.

Global Sustainable Bond Market Development

In 2026 H1, global green bond issuances amounted to $364.1 billion, accounting for 69% of the total issuance, with $210.8 billion issued in the second quarter, reaching a historic high. From the perspective of issuer types, financial enterprises account for 29%, and non-financial enterprises account for 25%. From the perspective of issuing countries, Germany, China, and France, which have the largest issuance scale, issued $55.8 billion, $44.3 billion, and $37.9 billion, respectively. From the perspective of currency issuance, the euro has the highest proportion, and its cumulative size has exceeded 2 trillion US dollars.

In 2026 H1, global social bond issuances amounted to 79.9 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 11%. Among them, government agencies issued 53 billion US dollars, accounting for 66% of the total scale. In 2026 H1, global sustainable bond issuances reached $81 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 34% and a historic low. The World Bank issued $19.8 billion, making it the largest issuer of sustainable bonds. In 2026 H1, the global issuance of sustainable development linked bonds amounted to $4.7 billion, a year-on-year decrease of nearly 50%.

China Sustainable Bond Market Development

In 2026 H1, China’s sustainable bond issuance scale was 46.1 billion US dollars, with a total issuance of 729 billion US dollars, making it the third largest sustainable bond issuing country in the world. CNY is the third largest sustainable bond valuation currency in the world, with $41.6 billion issued in the first half of the year. Green bonds are the main bond in China’s sustainable bond market, accounting for 96%.

In February 2025, China released a framework for sovereign green bonds, with the first issuance of 6 billion yuan of green sovereign bonds in April 2025 and the second issuance of 6 billion yuan of sovereign green bonds in May 2026. The interest rate for this issuance has decreased from 1.88% to 1.42%, the subscription multiple has increased from 6.9 to 10.4, and the proportion of sustainable investors has increased from 22% to 35%.

In addition to green bonds, the categories of China’s sustainable bond market continue to expand. As of June 2026, China has issued a total of $4.1 billion in carbon neutral bonds, a total of RMB 42.6 billion in blue bonds, the first issuance of low-carbon transition bonds for biodiversity and added green trade and green consumption categories to the sustainable taxonomy.
