ESG Data Report

Bloomberg releases the ESG data report, aimed at investigating the financial industry’s collection, management, and usage of ESG data.

This survey involves over 100 ESG data related individuals, including investment managers, climate risk management personnel, data management personnel, etc. 49% of them come from North America, 21% from Europe, 21% from the UK, and 9% from Asia. 27% of the respondents belong to asset management companies, 27% come from private banks, and the rest come from wealth management companies (17%), banks (16%), and custodian banks (7%).

ESG Data Expenditure and Usage

In terms of ESG data expenditure, 92% of respondents’ data expenditure exceeded last year, with a proportion of expenditure growth exceeding 20% reaching 52%. These expenses mainly come from projects such as ESG benchmark index (24%) and ESG company score (19%). In terms of the use of ESG data, respondents place greater emphasis on factors such as data quality, data coverage, data prices, data integration capabilities, and data service quality.

When considering their relative position in ESG compared to other competitors, over 60% respondents believe they are already ahead in this area, and 30% believe they are still behind others.

ESG Data Strategy and Management

In terms of the ESG data strategy of the organization where the respondents are located, 44% believe that the application of ESG data can improve competitiveness and make it different from other companies. 45% believe that the application of ESG data is to maintain consistency with other companies in the industry. 10% believe that ESG data is only used to meet compliance needs.

At the application level of ESG data, over 53% of companies apply it to specific business lines, and 29% apply it at the company level. However, 55% believe that the persistence of data is difficult, and 48% believe that combining ESG data with other existing data poses certain challenges.

In terms of ESG data management, over 85% of companies store data in cloud servers, and only 15% use SFTP or API interfaces to obtain them.
