Introduction to Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative
The Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative is a voluntary initiative dedicated to supporting the global goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions. In a complex and constantly changing investment environment, the initiative offers:
- A globally recognized voluntary disclosure platform for climate targets.
- Realize market differentiation through credible disclosure of climate related information.
- Incorporate climate related financial factors into the entrusted responsibility, in accordance with customer requirements.
- Seize the opportunity in the energy transition and gain industry leadership position.
The Net Zero Asset Manager Initiative was established in 2020 and suspended operations in January 2025. The Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative believes that climate change has already incurred significant economic costs, and low-carbon transition policies need to consider the impacts of climate change. Asset managers need to consider how the financial risks and opportunities brought by climate change affect clients’ investment results and meet clients’ concerns about climate change by providing investment products, data, and information. The Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative plans to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius and, as much as possible, to 1.5 degrees Celsius to comply with the Paris Agreement.
The Net Zero Asset Managers’ Initiative has issued new commitments after its reestablishment, with a total of seven commitments, which are less than the previous ten:
- Provide customers with information to help them understand and respond to climate related financial risks and opportunities.
- Support clients in achieving their climate goals, such as increasing investment in climate solutions, transformational financing, and climate resilience assets.
- Set a net zero target consistent with global greenhouse gas emission targets, regularly review to reflect changing financial risks, customer expectations, and practices.
- Implement investment management strategies to support investees in addressing significant climate risks and opportunities, in line with positive long-term investment goals.
- Collaborate with key participants in the investment system, including but not limited to data and index providers, rating agencies, stock exchanges, and investment advisors, to provide products and services that appropriately reflect climate-related risks and opportunities.
- Ensure that the actions implemented by asset managers do not undermine these commitments.
- Publicly disclose the net zero plan of the asset manager, and annually disclose the actions taken and results achieved.
